WELCOME

January 18, 2010

I happy to report that PEARL AND WAGNER ONE FUNNY DAY written by the always-clever Kate McMullan and pictured by me, has been awarded a Theodor Geisel Honor prize from the ALA. The book takes on the perplexing problem of what happens when you are just not ready for April Fools Day and your friends are. This is the third Pearl and Wagner title. Another book is set to come out in a 2010: PEARL AND WAGNER FOUR EYES. (Dial Books for Young Readers, 2009)

VALENTINE SURPRISE by Corinne Demas, 2008, NEW IN PAPERBACK FOR 2010

Other books with pictures by me that came out in 2009:

THE TRAVEL GAME a new picture book by John Grandits which tells the story of how a book, a globe and an imaginative Aunt transports John from the family tailor shop of his youth in Buffalo, New York to adventures around the world. ( Clarion Books, 2009 )

POLICE OFFICERS ON PATROL a new picture book by Kersten Hamilton describes the adventures of four police officers as they respond to calls for help. Officer Mike patrols in his car. Officer Jan is on horseback. Officer Carl is on foot. And, Sergeant Santole keeps all running smoothly at the police station. Lots of action. Lots of fun. (Viking, 2009)

PADDINGTON AT THE BEACH a new Paddington picture book by Michael Bond. In this simple counting story, the sea gulls mount up as Paddington takes in the ocean scene. (HarperCollins, 2009)

For older young readers in the US, look for a new, illustrated edition of the first book in the Saxby Smart mystery series by the English author Simon Cheshire -- SAXBY SMART, PRIVATE DETECTIVE, IN THE CURSE OF THE ANCIENT MASK. ( Roaring Brook Press, 2009 ) More in the series are in the works.

As always there are many new Elf books out and about, with more in the works.

Finally, in the works for 2010 is a sequel to THERE'S A WOLF AT THE DOOR by the lovely Zoë B. Alley. It's titled THERE'S A PRINCESS IN THE PALACE and recounts in panel format five traditional princess-centered tales told in decidedly nontraditional language for the picturebook crowd. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, the Frog Prince Princess and the Princess and the Pea Princess. You'll have to read the book to discover these ladies's real names. And, I'm sure you'll be surprised to learn the true story of how all these Princesses are related. (Neal Porter Books, Roaring Brook Press, 2010)
